Beauty Confidential

beauty confidential

Residual information and musings from a retired beauty editor who really needs to connect it to some weighty issues to the world of cosmetics and skincare. So she thinks beauty is the basis of human interaction -- How attraction plays a part in every relationship you have, from your neighbour to your boss. First impressions are all about how you look and the anthropological and sociological manner in which your looks are interpreted. yes yes, blah blah blah...

In Memory

I remember her flaming red hair, slightly dull from the age
I remember her beautiful skin and how she remarked that a woman of her age should never wear glitter lipstick
I remember how she smiled when I asked her about her passion
I remember how she chided me when I told her I buy based on a pricetag
I remember how she changed the way I saw myself in an afternoon at Bakerzinn

She was a kook
a genius
a spirit
a force

It's true that the angels among us don't stay long
and Anita Roddick is one of them.

When I met her 18 months ago, she bounced into Bakerzinn like she was on high [on life, presumably]
she was upbeat, incredible and captivating
We spoke for barely 30 minutes but at the end of it, she gave me career advice!
She was a one-woman quote machine. Everything that came out of her was perfectly structured
I came out of that interview with a glow like never before... and I felt like it was one of the best interviews I'd had. And I always harboured the hope that I could maybe one day work for her in London in her new publishing firm. I wanted to soak in her energy and bask in her activist spirit.
From shampoos, she made a difference...

Anita, I'm going to miss you!

Contender Asia

You know somewhere in Toa Payoh, a car showroom has been converted into a fighting ring? I just found out yetserday. is for some reality series franchised off from a US show with Sylvester Stallone. Anyway, i need tickets. Men fighting in a ring. All cute. All topless. Count me in!

But anyway, I've come across a contender for Faux Pic of the Month. Here's Keira again. In a blog that is. starting. to look like it's. devoted to her. People, It's not, ok!

Taking the words out of my mouth

Hahaha... is like today, I'll let the experts say what I mean.
Like Nadine, of previous posts who writes this of this gem of a picture

what celebs will be like without stylists.
I heart.

Beauty And the Blog

This little lady's story quite the eyepopper
it's also the power of beauty and a blog
but also my favourite pet subject, the publishing industry!
Nadine Habosh was caught between two jobs at one point, then when news of her blog broke, she suddenly had no job! One she had quit from, and the other rescinded its offer! Horrors! The papers had her name for weeks after...

But there's a kick-ass happy ending!! I like!

Nadine has come up with a book called Beauty Confidential (this blog isn't btw named after that but after my own crappy column for a local rag) ... still, I'm liking the chick lit flavour of it and the minute it hits our shores, I think i'll pick up a copy. Still on pre-order at Amazon.com though.

Faux Pic Of the Month

Is starting to get a wittle regular
which is always not a good sign?
what will i think of my booty next month?
considering that the mags -- even one that "celebrates" real women sizes -- are starting to ditch the slogan and click the liquify button!
Liquify, by the way, is the "best" and "worst" tool on Photoshop, all peeps need to do is click and slide and suddenly your [insert body part of hate here] are slimmer.
But why do it to pretty ugly betty?
I thought we celebrated her as is
but now she's a giraffe whose arms are too thin to lift themselves!
World, I'm sorrrrry!

many thanks to Manolo's great new blog ayyyy.com for the post! He says it best.
But here's Glamour's stock-pile reply to what must be a bursting-at-its-seams inbox! I don't like it one bit.
and here's more from the manolo-verse.

no one exercises the face anymore! So much give those musch-kles a workout!
*giggle*

till death do us part

today's thinking is when we die, if beauty lasts forever, then maybe we is lookeee like this
but alas, this is but a ridiculously priced "art" from Damien Hirst.
he is no van Gogh but instead is the world's richest living artist
now that's beautiful!

Good VIbrations

The delish duo at Manolo for the Big Girl invited their readers to submit advice for young big gals.

Here're my favourites:

Zenevieva Says: Oh, and remember: myspace if visible to everyone, so don’t post dirty pictures.

beppolina Says: Eats lots of fruit and veggies — not because they’ll “make you skinny” but because they’ll make your hair glossy and your eyes shiny and your immune system strong.

Maribel Says: (oh, and seeing hairspray is always a plus) [ see Betsey's cutesy entry at FashionIsSpinach on the movie]

shiloh Says: Know that you’re beautiful. Everyone else will catch on…
